Some HMCF Coaches Reminders
1) Classes start on time with checklist all complete:
- Bars, technique plates, pvc pipes (optional), plates, etc all in their respective ready to go places
- Attendance checked as well as thanking/reminding them of registering for classes
- Verification of new people and in jury status
- Workout review and regression readiness (you should always have at least 1-3 regressions ready in your head)
- Music ready to roll: folks, look at every workout as a heavy metal rock show performance. Blow their doors off. Rock them like a hurricane (which means no country, no rap, no Blink 182).
2) In general, all components of class is time designated (make it work):
- Everything from the warm-up, ABC progressions, skill practice, WODs, etc are timed out in a way to allow for a complete workout experience. We likely get more done ion 1 hour than and CF operation on earth. This is not by accident but by design and attention to detail. It takes focus, attention, passion, and will power. Make it work, be a smooth operator, but don’t get sift/lazy and let times run all over the place (example: you are getting a 1 hour massage, but they ran out of time and they don’t massage your back or feet. Oops. Yeah I got carried away/distracted with your forearm massage-THE POINT-Complete workout experience each day that fits together to a bigger plan and build up).
3) Need to ‘sell it’: (Snatch day) every single person will have their own perception of Crossfit, what it means, what it is, and what it should be. That is fine and great but we are the experts and we are heavy Metal CrossFit. We need to help them understand and bigger/better picture and why things are the way they are…or need to be a certain way. If there is a certain movement/exercise they don’t love or element of the programming they don’t love =HELP THEM LOVE IT. This starts with mere ‘selling it’ or ‘helping them understand why it is so important/awesome.’ This is a daily task and should be part of your 30 second commercials/elevator speeches every single day.
- Example: ‘Wooooooo it’s snatch day!!!! The best day of the week! Alright folks, the best, hardest, fastest lift in the book. It requires supreme coordination, skill, flexibility, and strength and we are ALL doing it right here and right now. You are all my HMCF ninjas and we will find the right progression of it for you today (with the modified ABCs). Blah, blah, blah…and remember folks-this Is the hardest lift in the book and why we pract6ice it every Wednesday! Pay attention and kick ass on these ABC progressions and soon you will be a snatch master too! Let’s do this!!!
- Example 2:’ Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It’s back squat day! The best day of the week! Yes, back squats! Perhaps the most beneficial foundational exercise in the nook for building lean muscle mass, dropping body fat, running faster, longer, jumping higher, looking better naked and increasing job productivity! Equaled only by the deadlift, which we do on Thursdays, which is also the best day of the week!!!
4) Room clean-up & general room order: every class needs to be left cleaned up and orderly. PERIOD. It should be essentially set and ready for the next class ready to roll (bars, plates, pvcs, jump ropes, jump boxes, etc….no random loose items in the way of running lanes, wall ball, etc, etc, etc). Everything has a designated spot which took us weeks to figure out. MAINTAIN THIS.
5) Room set up-Just as room clean up needs to be a tight/consistent operation so does room set-up. This means 2 things: 1) Have things clean/orderly for the next class. 2) The PM person (last class, etc) MUST MAKE SURE EVERY GRID IS READY TO GO WITH BARBELLS, PVC, ETC. NO EXCPETIONS, EVERYDAY OF THE WEEK. The AM coach needs this ready to go when they walk in the door.
6) Back up coaches/assistants-this one is HUGE. And I won’t waste the time stating how under my skin this gets. But, there is a reason (s) we have back up coaches. First off, to make it the best possible experience for our clients. Second, a potential learning experience for the back up coach (you should learn something every day no matter who you are assistant or how trivial the class/task may seem…if not, you’re not trying hard enough or your awareness sucks-focus.).
- When you are a backup coach: all this means is you are not leading the class. YOU ARE FLOATING THE ROOM LIKE AN ANIMAL COACHING, CUEING, FIXING, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN SITE. WHEN THERE ARE 2 COACHES THERE IS NO REAOSN NOT EVERYONE IN THE ROOM IS IN A+ POSITIONS AND KILLING EVERYTHING IN SITE. This coach is not inert or running idle on the sidelines…They are every bit as engaged as the lead coach and ready to execute. NO distractions, 100% focus on the task at hand. If I suddenly walked in a shot the lead coach in the head it would be ok, as the assistant coach is right there ready to complete the sentences of the lead coach. Deliver, deliver, deliver, service, service, servicer, value, value, value….all day every day. Re-read this one 100 more times. We will most likely have more back up coaches routinely to give our clients the best classes possible and to keep our coaches sharp and improving.
7) Feedback & programming feedback-I get random bits of feedback that float back to me and odd times. And I always wonder, ‘why was I not told this before?’ I don’t care what it is, if it is good/bad/whatever please give me feedback. We are a team and a tight ship. But we need to function like one. Which means I need your help and communication.
- That workout was awesome!
- That workout sucked
- That workout was missing something
- That workout was a 6/10 or a 10/10
- How about we work in some xyz’s (exercise, wod, etc)
- The music sucks
- We need/want xyz equipment
- We hate snatch day
- We want more skills class/competitors class/juggling class
- The people seem like they need to know more about xyz
- They all seem beat up in the shoulders, knees, wrists, etc
- The competitors are shot; they need a light day/week.
- The competitors need harder workouts
- The regular members need harder/easier workouts
- Whatever…if it crosses your mind: email/text me, tell me, etc. (best is email/text to start)…but, by ANY MEANS NECESARRY!
Failure to fully execute these will lead to VERY bad things. Starting with, loss of coaching responsibilities.
THANK YOU!
